Geology Hike: Ancient Rocks of the Vallecito Valley, 7/10/25
Description
Trail as Old as Time!
Join San Juan Mountains Association and the San Juan National Forest Pagosa Ranger District for one of our interpretive nature hike series this summer!
The Spanish name Vallecito ("Via-seeto"), meaing "Little Valley" is an apt name for this valley hike, yet the views along the way are anything but little. Following Vallecito Creek, the trail begins easy, flat and meadering, then begins to climb through a deep canyon with ponderosa pines, aspens, and conifers. Our turn-around point is at the first Vallecito Creek bridge at about 3.2 miles, with total round trip distance of aprox. 6.5 miles. Along the way, volunteer geologist Dave Bouquet will explain the rich geologic history of the area, and guests will view some of the oldest rocks in the San Juans. Elevation gain is aprox. 600 ft. The hike is considered moderately difficult with some relatively safe cliff edge exposure in a few spots - maybe a consideration for those with a fear of heights. There's a short stop for lunch on the trail, so pack your own lightweight trail chow.
